Tim Henman saw off Austria's Jurgen Melzer in straight sets to reach the last 16 of the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells on Monday. The British number one came through 7-5 6-4, despite dropping serve three times in blustery conditions.
"It was about who could stay positive and not get frustrated and I felt I did that well," said the sixth seed.
Henman will face Tommy Robredo in the fourth round, with Marat Safin a potential quarter-final opponent.
After failing to find anything like his best form in the opening win over Arnaud Clement, Henman was hampered by windy conditions as he looked to find some rhythm.
"It was really difficult conditions out there, which is not what you expect at Indian Wells," said Henman.
"There's usually no wind and today it was really blowy, which made it hard.
"With these conditions you have to accept you're going to mess a few shots up. But to finish it off as well as I did bodes well for the next round."
