Top seed Andy Roddick battled through fierce heat in Washington to beat Paradorn Srichaphan and reach the final of the Legg Mason Classic. Roddick withstood temperatures of 44C to win 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in 82 minutes as he goes for his fourth title of 2005.
"I think I'm playing very well," said Roddick. "I was trying to stay focused out there."
James Blake of the United States beat the Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych 6-4 6-3 in the second semi-final.
Roddick improved to a record of 43-9 this year that has seen him collect titles at San Jose, Houston and Queen's.
"I feel like I'm in a groove," said Roddick.
"I feel like I've turned the corner to playing well. I hit the ball well, got it doing what I wanted."
Blake, 25, reached his first ATP semi-final since 2003 at Long Island and his first since a 2004 illness that affected his hearing and vision and caused temporary facial paralysis.
"There were moments last year when I was questioning if I would ever be back on a tennis court," Blake said.
"There was a long time where I doubted if I would ever be back in a final again. This one I'm definitely going to savor.
"I have no pressure against Andy. I'm playing one of the best players in the world.
"I'm going to go out and have some fun. I need to have a big serving day."
Roddick said: "My heart is with James. He has been through a rough year.
"I cheer for James. He's one of the good guys on tour. I want good things for him. That said, I want to beat him badly. He's athletic. He's dangerous."
Blake has lost all five of his previous ATP matches against Roddick.
