Delgado was a late replacement for Mardy Fish |
Britain's Jamie Delgado crashed out of the Legg Mason Classic after losing in straight sets to Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic. The 28-year-old was given a place in the first round of the Washington event as a lucky loser after Mardy Fish's withdrawal with a wrist injury.
But Hernych converted four of his five break points en route to a 6-4 6-3 success in one hour and 12 minutes.
Delgado managed just one break of his own in the first set.
Hernych would have faced Andre Agassi in the next round but the five-time Legg Mason winner had earlier pulled out in order to prepare for the upcoming US Open.
Giovanni Lapentti of Ecuador beat Nicolas Mahut of France 6-2 6-3 to earn a second-round meeting against top seed Andy Roddick.
Alexander Popp of Germany defeated Bjorn Phau of Germany 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-3.
James Blake, the winner in 2002, advanced to the second round with a
6-4 6-3 victory over Jean-Rene Lisnard.
