Andy Roddick produced some trademark huge serving on his way to beating Marat Safin and qualifying for the semi-finals of the Masters Cup. The American edged the big-hitting encounter 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-4) for his second win of the week, following his victory over Tim Henman.
Roddick came up with the big serves when necessary, saving three set points before in the second set.
Safin must beat Tim Henman in his final match to reach the last four.
And the Russian said after losing: "It sucks. But I'm not sad. I'm still alive. I have a chance against Henman.
"He has a difficult serve and volley game. I have to stay focused and sometimes go for it. You have to play your game and not be scared of missing."
Roddick was delighted to have qualified for the last four.
"I stepped up on the big points and forced the issue on him," he said. "I was lucky to get out of that first set. The rest of the match I couldn't have asked for more."

World number one Roger Federer continued his unbeaten run in the tournament with a 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory over Carlos Moya.
Federer was off his best form but still looked to have the upper hand over his Spanish opponent in an opening set he comfortably closed out.
But Moya found his form in the second set to easily level before Federer lifted his tempo once more to break early and then round off the match.
"It was tough mentally, knowing I'm qualified and knowing his situation," said Federer, who had already booked his semi-final place before coming out on court.
"Both could feel it. He needed it so much and I didn't."
Moya blamed missed opportunities for the defeats, saying, "I'm disappointed.
"I had my chances. I lost eight out of nine break points. When you do that against Federer, you lose. If I had won one of those points, it could have been different."
