Tim Henman begins his challenge at the Swiss Indoors as the highest-ranked player left in the draw following Roger Federer's withdrawal through injury. The world number one pulled out with a torn thigh muscle before the tournament in his hometown of Basel.
Now, all eyes are on second seed Henman who takes on Frenchman Antony Dupuis in the first round on Wednesday.
Henman said: "It's a tough one for Roger and the event too but a lot of talented players remain in the draw."
The British world number four is chasing some vital Masters Cup qualifying points in Switzerland.
Henman lies in seventh place in the Champions Races - and only the top seven go through to the season's finale in Houston.
But the 30-year-old, who is recovering from the effects of a magnesium deficiency, is feeling confident. "Practice has gone well and I'm feeling a lot better," said Henman, who won the Basel title in 1998 and 2001.
"Antony is a very talented individual so it's going to be a tough match.
"But I enjoy playing here and I can't wait to get started.
"The conditions really suit my game as the ball stays nice and low so my sliced backhand works well and my volleys can be very effective."
