Fifth seed Tommy Robredo needed three sets to overcome Swiss qualifier Stanislas Wawrinka in the opening round of the Swiss Indoors in Basel. Robredo came back from a break down in the deciding set to see off Wawrinka 7-6 (8-6) 5-7 6-4.
Robredo could face a quarter-final against second seed Tim Henman, who begins his campaign on Wednesday.
Top seed Roger Federer was forced to pull out of the event after suffering a torn leg muscle in training on Monday.
Federer had been due to play world number 36 Luis Horna of Peru in his opening match on Tuesday.
Horna later played lucky loser Bohdan Ulihrach and ironically he was also forced to retire with injury after losing the first set 6-1.
Czech Jiri Novak opened the first day's action in Basel by beating Florian Mayer of Germany 6-2 6-3.
But Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan is out, beaten 7-6 (9-7) 4-6 3-6 by Stefan Koubek.
