Jelena Dokic suffered her ninth straight first-round defeat with a loss to Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn at the China Open. The former world number four from Serbia and Montenegro, who has slipped to 43rd in the world rankings, lost 6-3 6-0 in Beijing.
Dokic was visibly dejected as she went down to defeat, and she has not won a match since April.
Elsewhere, home favourite Li Na shocked Australia's Nicole Pratt 6-3 6-2.
Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland defeated Puerto Rico's Kristina Brandi 2-6 6-4 6-3, while Russian Vera Douchevina saw off Anca Barna of Germany 2-6 6-2 6-3.
