Russia's Dinara Safina set up a second-round encounter with top seed Serena Williams with a 6-3 6-2 win over Zi Yan at the China Open. Safina, the world number 48, was far too strong for her Chinese opponent.
Williams, who has a bye in the first round, arrived in Beijing on Monday to be greeted personally by the tournament director Lincoln Venancio.
Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova and US Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova are also included in a strong field.
