Clockwatch: Capriati v Serena
American sixth seed Jennifer Capriati beats compatriot Serena Williams to book her place in the semi-finals of the US Open.

Third set

Capriati starts off with a double fault to slip to 0-15 but recovers as Serena loses out on a close line call. The third seed again over-hits her forehand at 30-15. This time Serena finds the line at 30-30 but Capriati finds a neat lob at 40-30. The sixth seed misses match point as she whips the ball into the net at deuce.

The sixth seed brings up second match point as Serena now finds the net but Capriati goes long at the net to take the game back to deuce. Serena pours on the power to go wide and Serena nets to hand Capriati the match.

Serena slams down the ball after sending Capriati racing round the court at 15-0. A double fault takes Serena to 30-15 in front of a lively crowd. Capriati carelessly shoves the ball wide at 40-15 and Serena holds.

Capriati 2-6 6-4 5-3 Serena
Capriati is again put under pressure by Serena at 15-30 but she recovers as the third seed mis-hits her forehand. Capriati moves to 40-30 as Serena dumps the ball into the net and she screams with delight as she holds thanks to another Serena error.

Serena delivers a strong serve at 30-15 and then gets into the net at 40-15. A fifth ace sees the third seed hold.

The sixth seed nets the ball to dip to 30-30 as the tension builds. Serena holds her head as she fails to return but this time Capriati mis-hits for deuce. The sixth seed misses again to hand Serena break point but she cannot take it. Another long rally ends as the third seed nets the ball but Capriati is taken back to deuce. Two errors from Serena sees Capriati cling on.

Williams still looks a bit uncomfortable in front of a noisy crowd but she is able to hold to keep Capriati within sight.

Both players are testing each other and after scurrying round the court Capriati whizzes the ball right down the line to hold to 30.

Capriati 2-6 6-4 2-1 Serena
The third seed is still unsettled and now it is her turn to slide to 0-30. Serena finds one drop shot but goes wide at 15-40. The third seed cannot return a forehand which goes down the line from Capriati, who wins another break.

Capriati 2-6 6-4 1-1 Serena
The sixth seed makes some rare unforced errors to slide to 15-40 and Capriati double faults to hand the break back to Serena.

Capriati 2-6 6-4 1-0 Serena
Williams is looking to regain the composure she showed in the first set as she opens up the decider. She nets the ball to go to 30-30 and then loops the ball over the ball to hand Capriati a chance of a break. But Serena saves deuce with a powerful cross court volley.

Serena disputes a bad line call with the umpire which takes her to break point but she fights back to go to deuce. Capriati skips the ball over the net and then gets a lucky net cord to steal a break.

Second set

Capriati 2-6 6-4 Serena
Capriati is made to work immediately by the third seed but she moves to 30-15 as Serena goes long. The sixth seed nets the ball at 30-30 and Serena sends the ball racing to the corner to grab a break point. The third seed whips the ball beyond the line for deuce.

Capriati produces her first double fault at the wrong time but again Serena scuffs her return for a second deuce. The third seed dumps the ball into the net and Capriati is able to level at two sets all.

The sixth seed makes only her fifth unforced error of the match at 15-0 but Serena does likewise - her 32nd - to move to 15-15. A rare double fault takes the third seed to 40-30 but she holds with a deft slam at the net.

Capriati 2-6 5-3 Serena
The sixth seed is sent racing round the court by Serena but she is equal to the challenge and holds to love.

Capriati 2-6 4-3 Serena
Serena is still a bit edgy. Capriati fails to take advantage but Serena's own errors again take her to 30-30. The third seed nets to ball to hand Capriati break point at 30-40. The sixth seed goes long on a lob and Serena delivers a 117mph ace to take advantage.

The third seed fires long to go back to deuce but fires down another ace and clings on as Capriati shoots wide.

Capriati 2-6 4-2 Serena
Williams chooses to get into the net again and steals a point at 15-15. But the third seed wildly slams the ball into the post at 30-15. Williams gets a ball boy to remove an insect from the court before Capriati holds.

Capriati 2-6 3-2 Serena
Williams begins to look a little bit more anxious as she lets her fellow American in at 30-30. Capriati overhits her service return and then puts the ball wide to see Serena hold.

Capriati 2-6 3-1 Serena
Capriati begins to use more initiative, coming in to the net and trying more clever shots as she holds to love.

Capriati 2-6 2-1 Serena
Capriati takes the first point on Serena's serve but goes long at 15-15. The third seed summons up her power but the errors begin to creep into her game at 30-30. But she regains her focus to hold to 30.

Capriati 2-6 2-0 Serena
The New-York born sixth seed again relies on some mistakes from Williams as she moves to 40-15 but Capriati conjures a second ace to take a 2-0 lead.

Capriati 2-6 1-0 Serena
A couple of unforced errors from Serena hands Capriati two break points. The 28-year-old slams the ball long to lose one but Serena follows suit to hand Capriati a crucial break.


First set

Capriati 2-6 Serena
Serena sends her 28-year-old opponent dashing all over the court with some deft angled shots at 15-15. The sixth seed dumps the ball into the net twice to hand Serena two set points. Capriati goes long to hand the third seed the set.

Capriati 2-5 Serena
Serena is serving well which allows Capriati little chance of getting back on level terms. The only way in for the sixth seed is when Serena makes enough mistakes which take her to deuce. But Serena recovers to hold.

Capriati 2-4 Serena
Capriati seems to have gathered some composure on her serve as she comfortably holds.

Capriati 1-4 Serena
Capriati steals a point from a weak second serve at 0-15 and then Serena goes long to move to 0-30. She recovers but the sixth seed gets a break point chance as Serena again delivers a shot wild.

The third seed saves deuce with a diagonal backhand and comfortably hangs on with a neat forehand and an unreturnable serve.

The sixth seed finds an ace of her own to hold her serve to 15.

Capriati 0-3 Serena
A focused Serena is dominating the rallies but a close line call and a double fault sees the game go to deuce. But the 22-year-old American makes no mistake as she holds with an ace - the first of the match.

Capriati is tested in her first service game as she goes to 15-15. Serena fires down two backhand winners to move to deuce. The third seed slams down the ball at the net to grab break point which she converts as Capriati shoots long.

Capriati 0-1 Serena
Serena starts positively, thundering down some big serves to take the first game to love.

A packed crowd on Arthur Ashe Court greet the players in a hotly-anticipated showdown between the two Americans.

Serena dumped Capriati out of Wimbledon at the quarter-final stage but the roles were reversed at the French Open where Capriati reached the last four at Serena's expense.

The third seed is again dressed in her denim skirt and knee-length black boots while Capriati opts for a pink top.
