Henman out of Australian Open
Tim Henman is still nursing his sore shoulder
Henman could also miss the Davis Cup tie
Tim Henman will miss the Australian Open after failing to recover from shoulder surgery.

The British number one had the operation back in November and had been confident of making a return in time for the first Grand Slam of the season.

But on Sunday he said on his official website: "This was a very difficult decision to make.

"I've been working hard and much progress has been made but it's not quite there yet and I've said all along that I was only going to make the trip to Australia if I felt my shoulder was fully recovered."

Henman had set an 8 January date for his comeback at the Commonwealth Bank International at Kooyong in preparation for the Australian Open the following week

I am only interested in making the trip if I can compete with the very best players in the world

But the world number eight added: "Obviously the Australian Open is a very important event and one which I was very keen to participate in.

"I always enjoy my trips to Australia at the beginning of the year and my goal was to try and compete there again if at all possible.

"However, at this stage of my career I am only interested in making the trip if I feel I can compete with the very best players in the world and have a realistic chance of winning the title."

Henman only recently returned to the practice court and insisted the prospect of five-set matches was too much for his damaged shoulder.

His announcement throws Great Britain's Davis Cup chances into further jeopardy.

British number two Greg Rusedski has already withdrawn from the tie against Australia in February, citing a foot injury.

And Henman refused to be drawn on whether he would be fit for the tie.

But he added: "Losing Greg was obviously a huge blow for the team but we've got to try and cope as we did so successfully against Thailand.

"In the meantime I'm going to continue to work hard in the hope that the decisions I'm making now will enable me to regain full fitness and continue to play at the highest level for the next five years."
