| Saturday, 15 June, 2002, 23:22 GMT 00:22 UK Has Tiger got it wrapped up? Sergio Garcia is the only other player under par as Tiger Woods dominates the second round of the rain-hit US Open in New York. Can anyone halt Tiger's charge? A steady but unspectacular round from Woods saw him end the day as he had begun it - five-under-par. His playing partner Padraig Harrington dropped three shots to finish the day one-over-par, while Sergio Garcia moved into second place on one under with a third round 67. Nick Faldo rolled back the years with a 66 to finish on two-over-par, but Woods' iron grip on the sport looks set to continue. Can anyone mount a genuine challenge? Golf courses should not be set up long or short, and should certainly not be set up to help or protect against a particular type of player. The beauty of our game is variation. Challenge the best players to master all aspects of our great game, but don't be surprised if we still get the outcome we expect - a win for Tiger. Then again, why shouldn't the best person win? Even though Tiger is the best, I see that the US galleries have yet again started to heckle any European player that starts to reel him in. I would have thought it was hard enough to play against the man, never mind the crowd too! Tiger is the greatest thing that ever happened to modern day golf. It is left for his rivals to tame him and not the Course designers. Bravo, the tough Tiger
There are plenty of players with the physical skills to consistently compete with, if not consistently defeat, Woods. What differentiates Woods is his mental toughness. Players who call foul over the weather or the course are demonstrating the lack of mental toughness that keeps them from fully achieving their potential. When a player of Sergio's gifts and accomplishments complains of Woods receiving favouritism, all he does is show that Tiger has got inside of his head. That is not the recipe for winning in the face of stout competition. Tiger at present is the best golfer on the planet. This will pass like all phases in sport. We should enjoy his reign and look forward to his successor(s). He can't and won't win every time... Tiger is not just about length. His chip out of heavy green-side rough at seventeen demonstrated why he the best all-round golfer in the world. Adding length is not the answer, if all the players can reach greens, then the most accurate players will win - if only Tiger and Daly can reach then the course designers are playing directly into their hands. It's a shame that the focus has gone from making golf courses challenging for all the players and moved towards making them Tiger-proof.
It's up to the other players to raise their game to tame Tiger - not the course designers. Dare I suggest that when Jack Nicklaus dominated the sport that there wasn't this sort of outcry? Carlton Dixon, UK The best way to bring the pack closer to the Tiger is to shorten not lengthen the courses. The winner will then be he who can best handle 150yds in and treacherous greens. It is fantastic to see an all-time legend in the process of making history. Don't knock him, savour him. The game of professional golf is a tougher mental test than it is a test of golfing talent. With so little difference between the players' ball striking, putting and short games, it all comes down to who can focus on the shot at hand and keep their emotions in check. I feel sorry for all the others as Tiger is unmatched in this regard...Tiger by six strokes when it all ends on Sunday.
It stands to reason that the best player in the World should win on the toughest golf courses in the world. The irony is that by lengthening these Championship courses, only plays into Tiger Woods' hands even more. The bottom line is that from a commercial point of view, it's imperative that he is given a better than average chance of winning. Will Tiger win? Is the Pope a Catholic? Tiger Woods is by far the best golf player in the world at the moment (if not ever) he has won countless titles and there's no reason that he cannot win the 2002 US Open. Surely it may be possible to make a living from betting on Tiger (maybe each way as opposed to a win), because he's never that far away from the top. He has become the modern day Michael Jordan in terms of his talent and his will to win is on another planet. That is definitely something that the current World Cup lacks - anybody who stands out.
Nothing would please me more than to see Nick Faldo get back to winning form and win this major. I hope Tiger can win this and if he is on form he will. Whenever Tiger has at his best he leaves the rest of the field standing. The course existed before Tiger. It is mere coincidence that Tiger is a long hitter. He is still the favourite in other tournaments on shorter courses. I feel Sergio Garcia will have the greatest hunger for the title. He's not that far behind the Tiger when at his best
The situation is comparable to F1. When Shumi and Tiger win, people tend to focus on their instruments - Shumi's car and the golf courses for Tiger Woods. What people are reluctant to accept is that they are seeing the best of a champion who has elevated himself to a level that is out of reach of the others. Every course suits Tiger Woods since his game is so complete. Perhaps this one suits him more due to his length and accuracy. However, all that is irrelevant. If he is even vaguely in reach of the title come the last day then the rest of the field will almost certainly lose their nerve and gift it to him, just like at this year's Masters. Such is the aura of invincibity that now surrounds him. |
