Sad end for Scots drivers
Michael Schumacher wins the Japanese Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher was victorious again in Japan

David Coulthard lasted just seven laps of the last Grand Prix of the season, capping his poorest campaign in seven years.

The Scottish driver could only look on as Michael Shumacher ended a record-breaking year with his 11th win of the Formula One season in Japan.

Coulthard amassed just 41 points for the season, finishing fifth in the standings, his worst finish since he was seventh in 1996.

A win in Monaco was Coulthard's sole success of the year, with a second place finish coming in Canada.

There were four other appearances on the podium as a third place finisher in Spain, Brazil, France and the USA.

Schumacher totalled an incredible 144 points, with his Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello some way behind in second place with 77 points.

Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher claimed the third and fourth places, respectively.

"I lost the throttle on turn nine which I was told was due to a failure on one bank of the control system," Coulthard said when his race was over.

"I would have liked to finish the season with a podium place which I think would have been possible so I'm disappointed.

"I will now enjoy a bit of a break before we resume testing in November."

Fellow Scot Allan McNish was ruled out of the race by the Formula One medical official after his heavy crash in Saturday's qualifying.

McNish walked away from the crash and participated in the morning warm-up on Sunday. However, after he was re-examined he was not allowed to participate.

McNish was told in August that his services would not be required by Toyota for next season and has failed to register a point in his debut year in Formula One.
