Priestland is one of five uncapped players in the Wales squad |
Ex-Wales fly-half Jonathan Davies has called for uncapped Rhys Priestland to start at number 10 for Wales against Scotland in Murrayfield on Saturday. Davies has suggested the change after Wales lost their Six Nations opener 26-19 to England in Cardiff. With Priestland at fly-half Davies wants to use Stephen Jones and James Hook as impact players from the bench. "Why not play Priestland at 10 against Scotland. He is the form outside-half in Wales," Davies told Scrum V. "I don't think [Hook] is a full-back. We have tried him there and he is playing there because we have injuries. Outside-half? I said in the emotion of it all on Friday night: 'chuck him in at outside-half because Stephen Jones had a quiet game'. "But I'm not sure because he hasn't played there. "Look. Stephen Jones has played 80 or 90 caps. We know what Stephen can do. James Hook hasn't played 10. "Put Stephen Jones on the bench as security. I might play Jonathan Davies with Priestland and put Hook on the bench as well. Get the two big centres [Davies and Jamie Roberts], Priestland running, Lee Byrne is definitely full-back because we have go one-one else cutting angles." Jones' Scarlets understudy Priestland, 24, is one of five uncapped players named in coach Warren Gatland's 28-man Six Nations squad. He has impressed with a string of good performances in his region's number 10 jersey when Jones was out injured earlier in the season. Priestland was named on the replacements' against England but was the only Wales substitute not used. On the opening Six Nations defeat Davies said: "[England] were more clinical and more controlled. We were second best and it's now going to be a tough game in Murrayfield now." As well as outside-half there have been calls to change both half-backs with suggestions Dwayne Peel would deliver quicker ball to the backs than Mike Phillips. And Wales scrum-half legend Gareth Edwards conceded Phillips is out of form. | Dwayne Peel has got a lovely service. That's not being disrespectful to Mike Phillips because he is a stalwart in that area especially against the big packs where he is an extra back-rower |
"Mike hasn't hit the heights since the Lions tour. I thought he struggled through the autumn," said Edwards. "He looks a little lethargic. It's as if he wants to prove a point. He wants to take everyone on for a start and then get the ball away. "Dwayne Peel has got a lovely service. That's not being disrespectful to Mike Phillips because he is a stalwart in that area especially against the big packs where he is an extra back-rower." Edwards was particularly critical of the errors the Wales pack made against England in the two tries to one defeat. "We still haven't moved forward. We made crucial, silly mistakes. There is a Welsh world we tend to use about being 'Twp', some of the Welsh forwards were being Twp, being daft when it mattered. "We allowed England to keep just comfortably ahead. We never gave the crowd anything to really get behind us."
