Wales prop Catrin Edwards tries to break through the NZ defence
New Zealand Women gave battling Wales Women a seven-tries-to-one rugby lesson in their final World Cup Pool A game at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford.
The Black Ferns led 17-3 at the break as Kelly Brazier scored a try brace and Rebecca Mahoney went over.
Mahoney converted her own try while Non Evans replied with a penalty.
Caryl James hit back, but Brazier completed her hat-trick while Victoria Grant, Hailie Hurring and Monalisa Codling also went over.
New Zealand are still on course to fulfil their ambitions of being crowned world champions, but Wales are now targeting a best-possible finish of ninth in the two play-off rounds they negotiate.
They face Sweden at Surrey Sports Park on Wednesday (1415 BST), South Africa and Kazakhstan the other two sides in the ninth-place running.
Wales head coach Jason Lewis was pleased with his side's efforts, saying: "We spoke before the game about going in with belief and confidence.
"The girls have just produced their best performance and that was simply down to wanting to show what they are capable of.
"The girls know they haven't shown what they are capable to date and they really tested New Zealand.
"We showed we can mix it with the best team in the world. For us it's all about getting some consistency between games.
"New Zealand came out in the second half and they were flying, they really upped their game. They scored some fantastic tries and they are very difficult side to defend against.
"The girls' level of performance was far in excess of the previous two games and it was great to see the pride back in their performance."
In the other game in the group, Australia secured second spot after crushing South Africa 62-0.
They advance to a semi-final showdown against hosts England.
