Wales Women's flanker Catrina Nicholas has been ruled out of the World Cup by a knee injury suffered in Tuesday's 15-10 defeat by South Africa.

Nicholas, 27, ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee at Surrey Sports Park, where they also lost 26-12 to Australia on Friday.

Uwic's Vici Owens comes in as Nicholas faces up to nine months rehabilitation.

"It's a bitter blow to lose someone of Cat's experience," said head coach Jason Lewis.

"She is an influential member of the side and a key component of our pack.

"She's been playing really well so it's obviously a big blow lose such a key player."

Wales face New Zealand on Saturday in their final Pool A game, then enter two-rounds of play-offs to determine their overall ranking.

However, Wales are also without prop Jenny Davies until finals day on Sunday, 5 September after she was found guilty of stamping against the Wallaroos and banned for three games.

Wales Women's World Cup squad:

Forwards: Jenny Davies, Lowri Harries, Catrin Edwards, Rhian Bowden, Gemma Hallett, Shona Powell-Hughes, Louise Rickard, Rachel Taylor, Vici Owens, Jamie Kift (capt), Sioned Harries, Lisa Newton, Caryl Thomas.

Backs: Amy Day, Laura Prosser, Awen Thomas, Naomi Thomas, Mared Evans, Clare Flowers, Ceri Redman, Mellissa Berry (capt), Caryl James, Non Evans, Elinor Snowsill, Elen Evans.
