Colin Charvis played a record 94 times as a forward for Wales |
Ex-Wales captain Colin Charvis is to remain Newport Gwent Dragons defence coach and the region have revealed they believe his playing days are over. Charvis, 36, became a player-coach last season and recently underwent the knee surgery that has led the Dragons to the conclusion he will not play again. Dragons boss Paul Turner told the Dragons website: "We are delighted that Colin is staying with the Dragons. "He worked very hard both on and off the pitch last season." Turner added: "He will be a great asset to the side as a full-time coach." | 606: DEBATE |
Charvis is Wales' most-capped forward, capping his career with a try in his 94th and final appearance for Wales against South Africa in 2007. Charvis had stints with London Welsh, Swansea, Tarbes and Newcastle during his playing career that also included being a British and Irish Lion in Australia in 2001. "I thoroughly enjoyed my experience as player-coach at the Dragons last season and I am looking forward to the challenge of a new season at Rodney Parade," said Charvis. "The Dragons have some real rising stars and it's great to be working with them again this season." A statement on the Dragons website added: "The Dragons flanker, who recently underwent knee surgery, is unlikely to be gracing the pitch as a player." Charvis' on-field role could be filled by Welsh international Gavin Thomas, who has joined on a one-year deal after being released by the Scarlets. The Dragons have also lost flanker Richard Parks to retirement while Jamie Ringer has also left Rodney Parade.
