Charvis was without a club throughout the summer |
Newport Gwent Dragons captain Kevin Morgan welcomed Colin Charvis to the fold after the flanker made an unexpected debut at Cornish Pirates. "Colin brings a wealth of experience, he is by far the most experienced player at the Dragons," Morgan told the South Wales Argus.
"He is still a quality player, has preformed really well and I am sure he'll do a good job for us."
Charvis made a substitute appearance in the Dragons' 20-6 friendly win.
That came as a surprise after coach Paul Turner said in the build-up that the Wales and Lions flanker, 33, would not play and was a long way off match fitness.
"Colin's kept himself in good shape but is certainly not match fit," said Turner.
"It's not ideal and perhaps if we'd had Colin from when we first spoke to him [in May] he'd be in better shape.

"He will give balance to the back row and that bit of edge that we may be without with Jason Forster moving on - you need characters like that.
"We will be looking for 15 games from him, just as we will from the likes of Gareth Cooper, Ceri Sweeney, Ian Gough and Paul Emerick.
"We need to get the maximum out of our players and that means being able to rest them when they need resting.
"You need enough strength in depth to rest players, and come January if I have seen problems hopefully the structure is in place to be able to react to them and get people in."
Ex-Wales captain Charvis, who has 84 caps, was released by Newcastle at the end of last season.
He pondered retirement when talks with the Dragons and other sides fell through, but the Gwent region made a renewed, successful attempt to capture him last week.
