Newport Gwent Dragons struggled to break down a determined Cornish Pirates side in a friendly at Camborne.
An injury-time try by Gareth Maule gave the Dragons a flattering scoreline after the home side had put them under heavy second-half pressure.
But the Dragons defence had stood firm and restricted the home side to two Alberto Di Bernado penalties.
Jamie Ringer and Gareth Wyatt scored the Dragons' other tries, with Ceri Sweeney's boot adding five points.
Wales and Lions flanker Colin Charvis made his Dragons debut as a second-half replacement.
Saturday's match was be the third successive Pirates-Dragons pre-season fixture, the Welsh side winning 53-8 in 2004 and scraping a 23-19 victory last year.
Dragons coach Paul Turner:
"I was a little bit unhappy with our final penalty count. I think it was four to one against us. "That's a shame, but we'll take it on the chin and look at it again next week.
"Defensively we were very strong, especially in the second-half and we did some good things in the game."
