Cheeseman aims for Wales call-up

Tom Cheeseman
Cheeseman is unconcerned by the Wales selection policy

Tom Cheeseman has two targets in mind in Sunday's European Challenge Cup final at Kingsholm, Gloucester.

The Welsh centre hopes he can help Bath spoil family friend Mike Ruddock's day as Bath face Worcester in Europe's second-tier tournament.

Cheeseman, 22, also hopes to impress Wales coach Warren Gatland if he gets his chance to come off the bench.

"Mike's a top man. He's turned Worcester around and we expect a tough game," said Cheeseman.

606: DEBATE

The former Wales age-grade centre grabbed the headlines after scoring a hat-trick to help beat Ruddock's Warriors on 19 April in the Guinness Premiership.

But he has to be content with a replacement's role on this occasion.

Cheeseman said: "Things aren't going to badly for me at Bath. The season started off pretty well.

"With the World Cup going on I picked up an injury at Wasps which was a bit disappointing.

"I've been trying to get back into the starting line-up but Alex Crockett is playing well so I'm finding it pretty tough at the moment."

Cheeseman knows he must nail down a regular starting spot before winning Gatland's favour, but is unconcerned by the Welsh Rugby Union policy that favours home-based talent.

"The policy is a worry, but I believe that if you are playing the best rugby, you'll get picked wherever you are playing," said Cheeseman.

"It's in the country's interest to have the best Welsh XV out there so I don't know why they'd dismiss anyone playing in England or France if they are playing the best rugby in their position.

"I signed a new contract just before Warren Gatland was given the job so I'm at Bath until the end of the 2010-2011 season.

"I'm still young and concentrating on getting a first-team place and to play a few games on the trot to try to get my form up to international standard."

Tom's father Trevor - who played flanker for England B - was Swansea fitness coach and Tom a ball-boy when Ruddock was in charge.
