Neath scrum-half Gareth Jones suffered a serious neck injury |
Two Cardiff players have been suspended after a Premier Division match left Neath scrum-half Gareth Jones in hospital with a serious neck injury. Gary Horrigan and Ryan Howells were cited for foul play unconnected to Jones's injury and a WRU disciplinary sub-committee handed out two-week bans. A third player, Darren Ryan, faces a charge of reckless and dangerous play related to the 20 April injury. On Wednesday, Jones was "seriously ill but starting to make slow progress." A statement from Neath Rugby Football Club about the 28-year-old player said: "Gareth had successful surgery at the University Hospital in Cardiff on Tuesday to stabilise his neck injury. "He remains on a ventilator and will need further investigations to determine his future treatment and management. "Neath Rugby and Gareth's family are grateful for all the concern expressed from all levels of Welsh rugby." Ryan's disciplinary hearing will be heard by the WRU next week. | 606: DEBATE |
Neath had already clinched the Premier Division title for the fourth successive time when they travelled to face Cardiff for a Sunday match. Jones, of Pontypridd and who works as a decorator, was hurt at a ruck during the game. Play was delayed for around 10 minutes while medical staff attended to Jones during Neath's 24-22 defeat. After treatment on the pitch, he was transferred to hospital where scans revealed a significant injury to Jones's neck. Early last Monday morning he developed complications which required emergency surgery and Jones remains under observation in the Intensive Care Unit. Jones is receiving support from his family, Neath officials and fellow squad members.
