Jones' introduction at fly-half for Wales was pivotal against Scotland |
Gwyn Jones says Stephen Jones' introduction at fly-half was instrumental in helping to secure Saturday's 30-15 win over Scotland. James Hook had started in the pivotal role but was replaced on 58 minutes with Wales holding a slim 17-15 lead.
"Wales brought Stephen Jones on and he did change the game," former Wales captain Jones told BBC Wales' Scrum V.
"He was energetic, he directs the play and is constantly communicating to his players where he wants them to be."
The former Wales captain said Hook did not have a bad game, the 22-year-old Osprey scoring a try and converting all his kicks at goal.
But with Scotland threatening an upset in the RBS Six Nations clash in Cardiff, Wales coach Warren Gatland acted decisively to change his half-backs.

Off went Hook and regional team-mate Mike Phillips, with Scarlets pairing Jones and Dwayne Peel replacing them.
"James Hook didn't play poorly by any stretch, he scored a very nice try and he's a gifted open-field runner," Jones added.
"He had a nice touch for Lee Byrne's break before Shane Williams' try, but kicked too much to touch for Gatland's liking.
"It wasn't that he was making mistakes, it was about what he didn't do, what he doesn't offer in the same way as Stephen Jones.
"It's that directness in the game, that authority at outside-half.
"When Jones plays for the Scarlets they play very much off 10, he's in control and the ball comes to him.

"If he doesn't want it he makes sure somebody else gets it.
"You're looking for some organisation and it's why Wales were so loose, you're looking for your 10 to organise and command the ball.
"When Hook is playing for the Ospreys they play off nine, they play around Justin Marshall so it's not Hook making the decisions.
"It's part of the game that Hook has to develop over the years to step into that commanding role at 10."
Wales next face Italy in the Six Nations, with the Azzurri arriving in Cardiff on 23 February.
However, Jones believes that Gatland is likely to stick with Hook as his starter in the number 10 shirt.
"I think that Ryan Jones (who was replaced by Gareth Delve on 62 minutes against Scotland) will come back in as number eight and captain and I'm not sure whether they'll make too many other changes behind (the scrum)," Jones added.
"I think they'll start with Gethin Jenkins on the loose-head, I think that Alun Wyn Jones will come back in if he's fit in the second row - although I'm not sure who he'll come in for."
The Wales coach will pick his team on Tuesday, a full 11 days before the match at the Millennium Stadium.
