Wales' campaign at the Dubai Sevens ended with a narrow 22-19 semi-final loss to Australia in the third-tier Bowl competition on Saturday.

Australia's 17-7 half-time advantage proved too much for Wales to claw back despite two late tries from Lee Williams and James Lewis.

Wales had earlier beaten Tunisia 17-12 in the quarter-finals, Lewis, Aled Brew and James Merriman scoring the tries.

Two defeats from three group games had ended Wales' hopes in the Cup stage.

Dai Rees' side opened up with a 22-7 win over USA, with Williams (2) and Gareth Chapman crossing for tries.

But a 14-12 loss to Kenya was followed by a 19-14 loss to Samoa so Wales fell to the Bowl competition.

Wales were playing under the gaze of new national coach Warren Gatland, who officially began his tenure on Saturday.

Wales Sevens squad: Jonathan Edwards (Scarlets, capt), Richie Pugh (unattached), James Merriman (Neath), Nick Wakeley (Newport), James Harris (Dragons), Lee Williams (Scarlets), Martin Roberts (Ospreys), Gareth Owen (Ospreys), Rob McCusker (Scarlets), Gareth Chapman (Dragons), Aled Brew (Ospreys), James Lewis (Ebbw Vale).
