Gavin Henson has struggled for form since Wales' 2005 Grand Slam |
Gavin Henson says he was surprised at being named in Wales' 28-man squad for the two-Test tour to Australia. The 25-year-old Osprey back has not played rugby since suffering a knee injury recurrence in January.
"I was shocked but delighted to get the phone call but I'm determined to give 100% during this tour," Henson said.
"I've been out of rugby for four months but I've been working hard on my rehab. It's been a difficult year on the field but this has given me a real boost."
Wales play the Wallabies in the first Test in Sydney on 26 May and then on 2 June in Brisbane.
Wales coach Gareth Jenkins has left 16 senior players behind in Wales for a summer conditioning camp.
Barring injuries, it is likely that all of those will be included in the final 30-man squad for September's World Cup

With the final squad for September's World Cup to be whittled down to 30 players by 15 August, the likelihood is that there are just 14 places up for grabs.
A fit Henson firing on all cylinders would be a certain inclusion, but he has rarely produced his top form since Wales' 2005 Grand Slam triumph.
"I'm just pleased to get back into the squad environment and to be given the chance to play international rugby again," added Henson, who has suffered a series of injuries since then.
Jenkins is certainly prepared to give Henson the encouragement to find his way back.
"Gavin is an important player for us and we want to give him the best opportunity to force his way into the World Cup reckoning," Jenkins said.
"It will be good to have him back in the squad in Australia and we can monitor his fitness and form as we build towards September.
"Ultimately we will be picking the group of 30 players that we believe will gives us the best chance of winning the World Cup.
"If you are playing well you are never too old and never too young.
"Selection will be about the here and now and so players in possession of the shirts on tour to Australia have every chance of holding on to them."
