Quinnell coached Llanelli RFC to Cup glory last year |
Llanelli, Wales and Lions legend Scott Quinnell will return to Stradey Park next season as a coach. The former number eight has agreed a two-year contract as part of the Llanelli Scarlets coaching team.
Quinnell, set for a long-term role at Stradey, led Llanelli RFC last year but left to work for the family business.
"Scott has a terrific rugby pedigree, I'm delighted he has chosen to become a professional coach," said Scarlets director of rugby Gareth Jenkins.
"We need people like him ploughing their experience back into the game.
"I'm confident he can become a successful regional coach but obviously he needs to gain the experience to take him there.
"The role we've assigned to Scotty at the moment will develop his coaching skills and that role will evolve in time."
Quinnell said: "Having played professional rugby for 11 years, I felt I needed to take time out to decide what to do after my playing days ended.
Watkins was wanted by all four Welsh regions |
"I've enjoyed my year but to be honest have missed the involvement. I am now committed to becoming a professional coach.
"I know I've got a lot to learn but there's no better place to learn it than with the Scarlets and from someone of Gareth's stature.
"I'm so pleased to be back, especially at such an exciting time for the region."
BBC Sport Wales understands that the Scarlets have also re-signed 27-year-old Wales centre Matthew Watkins.
To do so they have had to fight off stiff competition from the other three Welsh regions, especially the Ospreys.
The Scarlets' home game with Ulster - scheduled for the Racecourse, Wrexham, on 7 April - will have to be rearranged following the Llanelli side's qualification for the Powergen Cup final (9 April).
