Pressure on Young as Blues lose
Blues coach Dai Young
Young offered to resign his position last week
Calls have grown for a change of leadership at Cardiff Arms Park after the Blues lost 9-13 to Edinburgh.

Coach Dai Young reportedly offered to quit last week after the region's Heineken Cup exit, although he has since denied this.

"There's only so much a coach can do and there comes a time when you need a change of voice," ex-Wales and Cardiff captain Mike Hall told BBC Sport Wales.

"Perhaps Dai should move upstairs like Phil Davies did at Leeds."

Former Wales and Cardiff fly-half was not so sure that the axe should fall on the coach.

Dai never shirks his responsibility, but the players feel they have let him down as a team
Blues captain Xavier Rush

"The players are the problem, but where do you go to replace them?" he said on BBC Wales' Scrum V rugby programme.

"Too much of the Blues' purchasing has been done by the board at the region, but the quality Welsh players are just not out there."

Hall agreed that the Blues board need to consider their positions, but claimed that a reduction of the number of Welsh regions from four to three would allow player quality to be concentrated.

Young still seems to have the support of the dressing room, captain-for-the-night Xavier Rush saying after the Edinburgh game:

"Dai never shirks his responsibility, but the players feel they have let him down as a team."

Young himself felt he could take more positives out of the Edinburgh defeat than the previous losses to Leeds and Perpignan.

"We could have won but there was a breakaway try and a few decisions against us, when you're down you're down," said the coach.

"It's been a hard week and we were never going to see magic rugby - it was nip-and-tuck but Edinburgh won the kicking game.

"We have to keep working, some of the youngsters put their hands up and showed some pride, something we didn't see at Leeds."

Rhys is not being made a scapegoat
Dai Young on the captaincy

Young does say he is considering handing Rush the captaincy on a permanent basis, following Rhys Williams' poor run of form.

"Rhys is not being made a scapegoat, you could never doubt his commitment, but perhaps he cares too much," said the coach.

"Maybe it is affecting his game, but form is temporary and class is permanent and he is firmly in our future plans.

"We haven't decided what we will do, but Xavier led well against Edinburgh."
