Mehrtens has scored 967 points in 70 appearances for the All Blacks |
New Zealand's Andrew Mehrtens has turned down the chance to join Llanelli Scarlets, BBC Wales Sport understands. The Scarlets have denied making an official offer to Mehrtens, but it is believed the 31-year-old fly-half made it clear he was unavailable.
An enquiry was also made for France fly-half Gerald Merceron, but he is staying with French club Montferrand.
The Scarlets are determined to rebuild their ageing squad and two more New Zealanders are being lined-up.
One former All Black, prop Dave Hewett, has already joined the Stradey Park club on a short-term contract. He could make his debut in Sunday's Celtic League match at home to Ulster.
The Scarlets made few summer signings in the close season, but a disastrous start to their Celtic League and Heineken Cup campaigns has highlighted the need for new players.
Fly-half has been a particular problem position, with Arwel Thomas and Gareth Bowen failing to fill Stephen Jones' boots after his summer move to Montferrand.
