The Scarlets have signed Canterbury and ex-New Zealand prop Dave Hewett. The 33-year-old made his All Blacks debut in 2001 and has won 24 caps - including an appearance against Wales in the World Cup - scoring two tries.
"He is here until the end of January when he has to return to play Super 12 with Canterbury Crusaders," Scarlets chief executive Stuart Gallacher said.
"His Canterbury contract ends in June when he will return to us on a two-year deal."
Hewett is expected to arrive within the next few days, subject to formalities and visa requirements.
The move is a sign of the Scarlets' intent, having had a disastrous start to their Celtic League and Heineken Cup campaigns following a close season where their recruitment drive was low key. They were boosted this week by the news that Wales hooker Robin McBryde is back in training after a career-threatening neck injury, and the signing of Hewett will be another shot in the arm.
"Dave is a dynamic and experienced player and is equally at home on either side of the front row, we look forward to welcoming him to the squad," said Gallacher.
The Scarlets are in need of a long-term replacement for 35-year-old tight-head John Davies.
The deal could be scuppered, though, if Hewett is recalled to the All Blacks squad.
The player told a New Zealand website that he would love to play against the Lions next year and there is a clause in his Scarlets contract allowing him to stay if he is required for that tour.
Hewett conceded that the chances of an international recall are unlikely, though.
