Wales and Scarlets hooker Robin McBryde has resumed training after a career-threatening neck injury. The 34-year-old hooker, who has won 33 international caps, could be back for the Scarlets at the start of December.
Hooker has been a problem position for Wales, and the news will boost coach Mike Ruddock ahead of the Six Nations.
"Robin has taken part in his first full contact session and he is delighted as he has had no reaction from it," said Scarlets coach Gareth Jenkins.
"We have got to progress him to a point where we can start him playing. That could be within two or three weeks, that's good news for him and us."
The Scarlets have missed McBryde's experience and leadership as they have struggled in the Celtic League and Heineken Cup.
Wales have selected Mefin Davies as first-choice hooker in McBryde's absence, but Davies does not have a regional contract and plays semi-professionally with Neath when not on international duty.
Of the other hookers in international contention, Huw Bennett has injury problems, Gareth Williams' throwing in has been a concern, and Steve Jones lacks the physical stature of McBryde.
