Gavin Hastings was appalled by Scotland's limp display against Wales at the weekend but the former captain is backing a swift recovery.

"It would be difficult to take any positives from the game," Hastings said of the 24-6 defeat at Murrayfield.

"There were incredible errors that you wouldn't accept in a schoolboys' game.

"But it's too early to lose faith with this team. I fully expect to see a rejuvenated Scotland take the game to Ireland in a fortnight."

Scotland went into the match against Wales heavily backed to win, having performed admirably in the opening 34-21 loss to France in Paris.

However, Andy Robinson's side were brushed aside by well-organised opponents and were the architects of their own downfall, with a string of dreadful mistakes.

Replacement full-back Sean Lamont described the team's effort as "abysmal" and called for an "honesty session" to address the shortcomings in Edinburgh.

The Scarlets back also said that it was "embarrassing" not to have seized the initiative when Wales were reduced to 13 men late in the first half.

When asked about Lamont's remarks, Hastings told BBC Scotland: "With a player expressing those views publically then you've got to think something has been wrong in the Scottish camp.

"He's not having a go, he's suggesting that the players own up to their own mistakes.

"Sean came on after Hugo Southwell went off with what I felt was a fairly brainless piece of rugby, with a complete lack of awareness.

"And Scotland seemed to have a lack of understanding of where their fellow team-mates were on the pitch.

"If a clear-the-air session can address those issues then I'm all for it."

Richie Gray missed the visit of Wales with a stomach bug after playing a barnstorming role in Paris and Hastings thought his absence was telling.

"We didn't front up in the forwards," he explained.

"Given the performance of Richie Gray against France - we missed him hugely - because he was able to galvanise the pack and drive them forward.

"After Paris there was an awful lot of expectancy from the Scottish public.

"Andy Robinson was incredibly disappointed with the performance of the team and I think they will work incredibly hard before Ireland come."

Glasgow centre Graeme Morrison is currently sidelined with a knee injury and is not expected to return for the clash with Ireland.

He admitted that Saturday's game was "tough to watch" and backed Lamont's scathing criticism of the team's efforts.

"Sean was perfectly right," he told BBC Scotland. "People didn't show up on Saturday and they will need to sit down and talk about it. I'm sure they've done that already.

"The good thing about the Six Nations is that the next game is only a couple of weeks away and we have an opportunity to work on righting those wrongs.

"Andy has instilled a real winning mentality in the squad and anything other than a win is unacceptable.

"There will be a few boys hurting and they need to believe in themselves and get some of that confidence back."
