Kellock captained Scotland in their historic Hopetoun Cup win over Australia

Lock forward Alastair Kellock has been named Scotland captain for the upcoming Six Nations series.

Kellock, who also skippers Glasgow Warriors, has previously worn the armband for his country, notably in the Test wins over Australia and Argentina.

Scotland open this season's Six Nations campaign away to France on 5 February.

"To get the chance to captain Scotland for the opening Six Nations game is huge," the 29-year-old told the Scottish Rugby website.

"I was delighted to make the squad, especially after being out for almost six months with my knee after Argentina, and now to be named as captain, is a real highlight, particularly with the competition for places."

Having won his first cap in 2004 during Frank Hadden's reign as head coach, Kellock has become a mainstay of Andy Robinson's Scotland side but missed the 2010 autumn Tests due to injury.

Scrum-halves Mike Blair, Chris Cusiter and Rory Lawson have shared captaincy duties in recent Tests.

"Al's leadership on and off the field was a key element to our success in Argentina and, since his return from knee surgery, the quality of both his personal displays and the way he has galvanised the Glasgow side, especially over the last months, has been really pleasing," added Robinson.

"I have spoken about the importance of broadening the influence of leaders throughout the side and Rory Lawson, Mike Blair and Chris Cusiter have all led the side well."

Blair and Lawson feature in Robinson's Six Nations player pool along with returning record-cap holder Chris Paterson but injured Cusiter remains on the sidelines.
