Scotland have been forced to alter their team for Saturday's Six Nations meeting with Wales, with Jim Hamilton replacing the injured Nathan Hines. Leinster lock Hines has not recovered sufficiently from a calf strain picked up during Sunday's defeat by France. Hamilton was originally not in the 22-man squad named by coach Andy Robinson on Tuesday. However, the Edinburgh 27-year-old comes straight into the starting line-up for the match in Cardiff. Hamilton has only recently recovered from a long-term knee problem. Scotland team doctor James Robson said: "Nathan suffered a calf strain and aggravated an old ankle injury during the match at the weekend. | We're going with Jim as he's our like-for-like with Nathan and will help us to get a platform should we look to get our mauling game going Scotland coach Andy Robinson |
"Whilst the injury has settled considerably, it is not at a level adequate for exposure to the rigours of Test match rugby and therefore Nathan is withdrawn from selection." Head coach Andy Robinson explained why Hamilton had been selected to replace Hines ahead of Richie Gray, who was already on the bench for this weekend's encounter with Wales. "I welcome Jim back into the squad following his own recovery from injury," said Robinson. "We're going with Jim as he's our like-for-like with Nathan and will help us to get a platform should we look to get our mauling game going. "Jim is also an experienced player."
