Godman kicked two conversions and three penalties against Fiji

Phil Godman believes Scotland are capable of delivering a rare victory over Australia but knows it will require a huge team effort on Saturday.

"We need to throw the kitchen sink at them, leave nothing out on the pitch," the fly-half explained to BBC Scotland.

"When you're playing against the best teams in the world, you need to really have a go and it's going to take a massive 22-man effort to get the win.

"But I believe we can do that and it's going to be a cracking game."

Godman turned in a controlled kicking display in last weekend's 23-10 win over Fiji and wants to build on that performance against the Wallabies.

"We know we have to up our game, but we go in with a really positive mindset after getting a good win under our belt," said the Edinburgh star.

"Everyone in the squad is positive and looking forward to getting out there."

Australia have triumphed in the last 16 meetings between the nations and Godman is aware of the visitors' many strengths.

"We need to stop their go-forward," he added. "They have got such threatening backs, especially Matt Giteau, who attacks the line, and he can be devastating with front-foot ball.

"So, we'll be looking to get a few big hits in and we'll have to work really hard."

The Wallabies drew with Ireland last weekend after beating England and Nathan Hines has been impressed by their performances.

"Australia looked really good at the breakdown and in the scrum, so that's something we'll need to be aware of," said the powerful lock.

"They don't make many mistakes. They are very well drilled with game-breakers in key positions, and when they see a defensive error they are quick to exploit it.

"We need to be in control of our own game; get the basics done well and put as much pressure on them as we can.

"Us forwards have got to get to the breakdown before them, make sure we retain possession and ensure we get good ball to the backs."

Chris Cusiter skippers an unchanged side and knows the defensive aspect of Scotland's game must be spot on, if there is to be any chance of an upset.

"Australia are very well structured in attack, so we have to be smart in defence and not allow ourselves to be manipulated," said the scrum-half.

"Against Australia, one lapse in concentration could lead to a try and we have to keep our focus and concentration for 80 minutes.

"We're the home side and we have to keep up the levels of physicality we showed against Fiji."
