Andy Robinson was just pleased to claim a win in his first game in charge of Scotland and said the side must improve after their 23-10 win over Fiji.

"The first 35 minutes, we played very well," the coach told BBC Scotland. "We played in fits and starts after that.

"We gave a lot of penalties away and knocked the ball on and the guys are a bit disappointed at that.

"We will have to raise our game next week. We are not going to get carried away, but it is a start."

Robinson, whose side host Australia next weekend, praised Johnnie Beattie for scoring Scotland's opening try and thought that Alex Grove played well on his international debut.

"Phil Godman controlled the game and kicked well out of hand and worked the lines," said the coach.

Scrum-half Chris Cusiter was similarly level-headed after leading Scotland as captain for the first time.

"It was good to get the win and we're pleased with that first and foremost," he said.

"We were playing against a Fiji team who were ahead of us in the world rankings."

Cusiter said the players were enjoying working under Robinson.

"He is very good at motivating the players, but he will be a bit frustrated at the errors we made," said the captain.

"We lost our rhythm in the second half and had a few turnovers.

"We got ourselves in some good positions but were not clinical enough."

Beattie was delighted to score an early try on his return to the Scotland starting line-up.

"It was a cracking way to get things started," he said. "But we should have pushed them more in the second half."

Graeme Morrison admitted that there was more than a hint of a forward pass in the lead up to his try, Scotland's second of the game.

"I think it was as flat as it possible could be," he said with a knowing smile.
