Webster breached the tough Uruguayan defence for two tries |
Simon Webster claimed two tries as Scotland A made hard work of a 27-3 victory over a resilient Uruguay side at the IRB Nations Cup. The searing heat in Bucharest made life difficult and Webster raced over for the only try of the first half. The Edinburgh winger later sauntered under the posts and Scott Lawson muscled his way over for the third try. David Blair kicked the rest of the Scottish points, while Jeronimo Etcheverry replied with a drop goal. Head coach Andy Robinson made 11 changes to his starting line-up after Friday's 49-7 win over Russia. Joe Ansbro, Calum Forrester and John Houston all made their international debuts but the Scots were made to work hard against well organised, but limited opponents. The South Americans offered little in attack but were dogged in defence, although Robinson will have been frustrated by a number of handling errors as promising attacks broke down. Webster finished off a rare flowing sequence for an impressive first touchdown, while his second was a simple affair, set up after a neat break by Blair. Lawson powered over for his third try of tournament after a strong drive from the pack but the Scots could not find a fourth bonus try. Scotland A next turn out against France A on 21 June and Robinson will want to see an improvement at the weekend. "The guys coped really well in incredibly intense heat," said the coach. "We realise the performance was a level below the display we produced against Russia, so we'll be working hard to improve ahead of the final match."
