Lamont gets Scots Sevens call-up

Scotland winger Sean Lamont
Lamont's return to the Scotland Sevens squad is a boost for him after injury

International winger Sean Lamont has been called into the Scotland Sevens squad ahead of this weekend's Edinburgh Sevens Festival at Murrayfield.

Lamont, who earlier this month moved from Northampton Saints to Llanelli Scarlets, has 36 caps for Scotland and replaces the injured Thom Evans.

His last outing at Sevens for Scotland was the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Lamont, 28, told BBC Radio Scotland: "To get the call-up to represent Scotland again is really fantastic."

Scotland lost 26-12 to England at Twickenham on Sunday in their first ever IRB series semi-final, a match Lamont followed at home.

"I was sitting in the lounge watching it on Sunday, thinking how much fun I had with the Sevens last time," said Lamont.

"Obviously it was quite amusing to get the phone call on Monday morning saying 'do you want to come up, Thom's pulled out?' It was quite surreal.

"The boys had a great tournament last week and they are looking to continue it and hopefully the home crowd will come out and fill the seats and make it a good day."

Sean gives us terrific pace and power

Scotland Sevens coach Stephen Gemmell

Lamont has spent much of the last two seasons burdened by injury and is aware his fitness will be tested by the Sevens format at Murrayfield.

He said: "It's not just the odd run at full pace, like in fifteens.

"You're constantly on the go and your lungs are really having to work hard, so hopefully over the next few days I can get my lungs up to speed again."

Scotland Sevens coach Stephen Gemmell said: "Sean's addition is great news in terms of bringing in international quality players to the squad.

"There's no-one else the same as Thom [Evans] but Sean gives us terrific pace and power."

Scotland go into the eighth and final leg of this season's IRB Sevens World Series in Pool C, along with Kenya, England and Canada.
