White injury doubt for World Cup
Jason White in action for Scotland against Romania
White has been an inspiration for Scotland over the last year
Scotland captain Jason White faces a race to be fit for the World Cup after being ruled out for the season with cruciate knee ligament damage.

The Sale Sharks flanker, 28, is to undergo reconstructive surgery on his right knee and will be sidelined for up to nine months.

White's studs caught in the turf during the first half of Scotland's 48-6 victory over Romania nine days ago.

Number eight Johnnie Beattie will also be sidelined for six weeks.

The Glasgow Warriors forward was carried off early in Saturday's win over the Pacific Islanders having sustained ligament damage to his left ankle.

Scotland are already without fellow back-rower Ally Hogg, who may miss the start of the Six Nations with knee ligament damage.

606 DEBATE: How bad is this news to Scotland's World Cup hopes?

Scrum-half Chris Cusiter is also likely to miss at least the first half of that competition after undergoing shoulder surgery.

But confirmation of the seriousness of the injury to White, who has led the side so impressively since taking over as captain last autumn, is a major blow.

National team doctor James Robson said: "Following consultation with orthopaedics specialist Dai Rees, it has been decided that Jason will require repair to his anterior cruciate ligament. That operation will take place next week.

"Following that, Jason will embark on an intensive rehabilitation programme with his club."

Meanwhile, Cusiter has dismissed suggestions that his injury could be career-threatening.

"I spoke to the surgeon and he feels that he has stabilised it and fixed the damage done," he said.

"The treatment I have received has been spot on and carrying out the operation so quickly gives me the best chance to get back as fast as I can.

"It means that I will miss a big chunk of the season and, with the timescale I have been given, it looks like I will miss at least some of the Six Nations.

"But I just have to give it as long as it takes to heal."

Cusiter did not wish to comment on the off-the-ball challenge that has led to Tonga flanker Viliami Vaki being cited.

A Six Nations spokeswoman confirmed: "Vaki has been charged with a breach of the law which covers dangerous tackling.

"Vaki's case will be dealt with by an independent disciplinary panel within the next few days."
