Borders excite coach Bates
Former England scrum-half Steve Bates has been confirmed as Tony Gilbert's replacement as coach of The Borders.

Bates is credited with playing a key role in identifying and developing the talent of Jonny Wilkinson while at Newcastle Falcons.

And he said: "There are real opportunities at The Borders to grow and develop a very strong team.

"Tony Gilbert leaves a good legacy and attitude among the players for me to build on."

Bates, who will take up the post on 1 June, served as coach to the Falcons for seven years, leading them to the English Premiership title in 1998, the Tetley's Bitter Cup in 2001 and to two European semi-finals.

"At the moment, there is a lot going in the Celtic League and Scottish rugby in general. Therefore, it's great to be getting involved at this level.

We were very impressed with his plans
Borders chief executive Alastair Cranston
"What is particularly exciting about this role, and how it differs from roles in the Premiership, is that I have an opportunity to develop players who will go on to play for Scotland.

"During my time at Newcastle, there was a strong ethos of developing young players for the future and I'm looking forward to using that experience at The Borders for the benefit of both the club and the national side."

Borders chief executive Alastair Cranston added: "Steve loves the Borders area and he's an ideal individual to be involved with the team.

"He also has a lot of experience in forging good business and community relationships and, as a coach, he has a proven track record.

"He has a particularly good record with young players, including the young Jonny Wilkinson.

"Fundamentally, it is his ability as a coach that made him an outstanding candidate for the job; everything else is a plus.

"But we were very impressed with his plans and we are convinced that he is the right man to take The Borders forward in our third season."

Borders veteran prop George Graham, who worked with 41-year-old Bates at Kingston Park, will be his assistant.
