Chris Paterson was Scotland's top points scorer in Australia

Paterson was his country's top points scorer in Australia during their much-criticised progress to the quarter-finals.

Scotland's kicking specialist contributed 71 points - three tries, seven conversions, 13 penalties and one drop goal.

But he also showed his versatility, starting the tournament on the wing before showing his immense promise at fly-half as the Scots saved their best performance for the quarter-final defeat by hosts Australia.

Paterson said: "I'm delighted. The World Cup was obviously a huge event and to play five back-to-back internationals on successive weekends was a major test.
