Jones believes Samoa have a chance of an upset |
Samoa assistant coach Michael Jones believes his side can upset England in Sunday's Pool C encounter. The English are hotly tipped to cruise to a comfortable win against the Pacific Islanders.
But the former All Black said: "Everything is stacked up in their favour except we do have that belief that, on our day in an 80-minute period, the Samoans can achieve anything if things go our way.
"We've got to believe there are some errors we can exploit otherwise we'd give up before we go out there."
Jones has experience of beating England at the World Cup, having scored the only try in the All Blacks' 18-12 win over the English at Twickenham.
And the Samoan-born Jones added: "This has always been the week we've been targeting.
"If we really want to make a statement at this tournament and not only profile all that's good about Samoan rugby then it has to be on Sunday night.
"That's what we are going to be measured on and not beating Georgia by 40 points.
"There's a a huge belief in each other in this team. We've always maintained we are not here to make up the numbers.
"While we've got so much respect for England and they are deservedly number one, we really want to go out there and make a statement about Pacific Island rugby."
England are runaway favourites to top Pool C having defeated South Africa 25-6 on Saturday in a tense contest.
But Jones insisted his team were aiming to upset the pool's hierarchy.
"We are big believers in the David v Goliath story. We actually believe it's true," said Jones, a devout Christian.
"We refer to that not only in our prayers at night but are firm believers in that kind of analogy."
