Mitchell rings the changes
Steve Devine in action in training
Devine will start at scrum-half

New Zealand have made nine changes for their second match of the World Cup against Canada on Friday.

Coach John Mitchell has named an entirely new front row and called up Steve Devine at scrum-half as well as swapping around his backs.

Carlos Spencer plays despite hurting his ankle against Italy in a collision with Tana Umaga that is likely to rule the centre out of the tournament.

Umaga, who tore posterior cruciate ligaments in his knee, was not considered for selection along with Joe Rokocoko and Aaron Mauger.

New Zealand are expected to announce whether they are going to call for a replacement for Umaga on Wednesday.

"We want to give him every chance. He is our vice captain. We want him and he has put a lot of work in to get to the World Cup," Mitchell said.

"We are waiting for the swelling to come down. With posterior cruciate damage there have been successful returns."

Rokocoko suffered a minor hamstring tear while running in the second of his two tries against Italy, while Mauger is suffering from a groin strain and knee injury.

With Leon MacDonald coming in at full-back, Mils Muliaina switches to the wing in place of Doug Howlett.

Caleb Ralph will start on the other wing in place of Rokocoko, who is expected to be fit for New Zealand's next match against Tonga.

"Joe Rokocoko's out for this week, but he's coming on fine," Mitchell confirmed.

Ma'a Nonu, who came on for Umaga against Italy, replaces his Wellington Hurricanes team-mate at outside centre.

Mitchell will start with Kees Meeuws, Mark Hammett and Carl Hoeft in the front row, with Marty Holah and Rodney So'oialo making their first starts of the campaign in the back row.

Skipper Reuben Thorne will fill in at lock if required with Mitchell naming two flankers, Richie McCaw and Auckland's Daniel Braid in the reserves.

"Reuben will play lock if needed," said Mitchell. "But Richard McCaw is the Richard Hill of New Zealand rugby in that he can play all three loose forward positions."

New Zealand: L MacDonald; M Muliaina, M Nonu, D Carter, C Ralph; C Spencer, S Devine; C Hoeft, M Hammett, K Meeuws, B Thorn, C Jack, R Thorne (capt), M Holah, R So'oialo.

Replacements: B Blair, D Howlett, B Kelleher, D Braid, R McCaw, D Hewett, C Flynn.
