Alex Grove faces fight for Worcester Warriors place

Alex Grove
Grove qualifies for Scotland through his Scottish grandfather.

Worcester Warriors centre Alex Grove accepts he faces a fight to get into the team after returning from a six month loan at Edinburgh.

Grove moved to Scotland to keep his international career alive, but is now focusing on events at Sixways.

"I am hungry to get back into the side and get promotion," Grove told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"I am happy with my fitness, strength and speed, I am stronger and fitter than I have ever been."

He added: "There are guys in 12 and 13 slots at the moment, but I can only control what I can control: when I get a chance I have to make the most of it.

"I must make sure I am first choice centre at the club. In training I have to do something with the ball and not mess up.

"A lot of players whinge they don't get an opportunity, but it's totally down to the player to give a good account of themselves when they get the chance."

Alex needs to prove to me he is good enough to come into the team

Warriors coach Richard Hill

Grove says he was pleased he had moved to Scotland, even though it did not guarantee him a place in the Scottish side.

"I thought it was a worthwhile experience, I have developed as a player, and it was good to play in the Heinekin Cup as well.

"I went there to keep my international aspirations alive, I needed to play in the Magners League, Premiership or Top 14.

"I looked at what I wanted to do and international rugby has to be a priority. Although I did not start for Scotland, I was in the squad and hope to be in for the Six Nations.

Warriors coach Richard Hill says Grove will have to work hard to impress him.

"Alex will have to earn his spurs," said Hill.

"He is a very good player, but as far as I am concerned - and I have spoken to him - Alex needs to prove to me he is good enough to come into the team.

"At the moment we'll we'll be looking to play him in the British and Irish Cup games, and possibly in an A team game."

"I'll watch him in those three games and I'll have a better idea of where he is and he will have had more time to train with us."
