Alex Grove called up for Scotland

Worcester Warriors centre Alex Grove is shocked at his call-up for Scotland's autumn internationals.

After being watched by Scotland coach Andy Robinson in the Warriors' defeat against Harlequins, the 21-year-old has been promoted to the national side.

"I am still pinching myself," Grove told BBC Hereford and Worcester. "And I have plenty of work to do to make sure I get a cap.

"I know I have to fight for my position and I'm taking nothing for granted."

Grove qualifies for Scotland through his grandfather, the former Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion footballer, Ron Wylie.

And he admitted that seeing Robinson at Sixways for the Quins game last weekend gave him a boost.

"It wasn't great as we lost," said Grove. "But it gave him a good idea of how we are playing.

"It gave him a better feel for how I was playing the game by being here, rather than watching it on video.

"He gave me some feedback after the game, and also some things I need to work on."

Grove is one of a number of players who have come through the ranks at Sixways and been given their chance by Mike Ruddock.

Grove said: "There are a lot of lads here who are on the brink of the first team having come through the academy.

"I got my chance last year and took it. We youngsters are always asking for chances to play in the first team, and when you get it you have to try and cement your place.

"I have learned a lot from the likes of Chris Latham, Pat Sanderson and Rico Gear."
