Mullan surprised at Saxons call

Matt Mullan
Mullan has been consistently impressive for Warriors this season

Worcester Warriors young prop Matt Mullan says he was shocked to be named in the England Saxons squad.

The 21-year-old has been a key figure during his first full season in the senior squad.

Mullan, who is a product of the Worcester academy, says his selection by England Saxons coach Graham Rowntree has yet to sink in.

"I was very surprised when I found out but it's really fantastic news," he told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

"Graham Rowntree came to see Warriors before Christmas and watched a session with us.

"After that our forwards coach Tony Windo pulled me to one side and told me that he thought they were looking to put me in but I didn't want to believe it because it wasn't official.

"It has been a while waiting to see if it was going to happen and I only dared tell my dad that I might be in.

"People have mentioned England to me before but I don't pay any attention to it.

"This is my first real season playing regularly for Warriors so I have had to just concentrate on that and playing well to keep my place."
