Ulster 19-7 Newcastle Falcons

Darren cave scored Ulster's second try against Newcastle.

Tries in the second half from new man Dan Tuohy and Darren Cave saw Ulster beat Newcastle Falcons in a pre-season friendly at Ravenhill.

Newcastle flanker Brent Wilson's try was converted by fly-half Jimmy Gopperth to give the visitors a 7-6 lead at half-time.

Ulster went ahead through Clinton Schifcoske's third penalty early in the second half.

Lock Tuohy scored a breakway try and centre Cave added the second touchdown.

"It was a very, very tough game, a tough test for us but we defended outstandingly well throughout the game," said coach Brian McLaughlin after the match.

"Newcastle gave it everything in the first 25 minutes and one mistake cost us a try.

"I told the guys at half-time that we needed to hold onto the ball better in their half of the pitch and, all in all, we scrummaged very well.

"The whole team played exceptionally well and we are all very proud of our performance."

Darren Cave suffered a calf injury during the game and this will be assessed before a decision is made on his availability to play in the friendlies against Viadana and Worcester.
