Sale Sharks have appointed hooker Neil Briggs as club captain for the remainder of the season.

The 25-year-old takes over with immediate effect but will hand the job back to regular captain James Gaskell, who is injured, next season.

Head coach Mike Brewer said: "James will be out for 14 to 16 weeks or so then he's got to concentrate on regaining fitness and have game time.

"Briggs will look after the squad as captain for the rest of the season."

He added: "James will captain the side if Briggs is 'on downtime' having a week off and will then take over again next season."

Briggs joined Sale in 2005 from Rotherham and his versatility has seen him has spend time playing at flanker, winger but has found himself established as the club first-choice hooker.

His first game since being confirmed as captain will be away against Leeds Carnegie.
