Osprey Williams has scored 51 Wales tries in 73 appearances |
Ospreys wing Shane Williams says his first full pre-season of training for around seven years has paid dividends. The 33-year-old Wales and British & Irish Lions star says he feels fit and refreshed as he targets the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Williams has recovered from the shoulder injury that ruled him out of Wales' June tour to New Zealand. "I was not involved in the New Zealand tour. I've had time to reflect as well and get myself fit," he said. Williams turns 34 during the 2011 Six Nations campaign and having scored 51 tries in 73 Wales appearances is relishing what lies ahead for region and country. Wales face Australia, South Africa, Fiji and New Zealand in November, the Six Nations and World Cup build-up Tests next summer before heading down under for the tournament that kicks off in September. The Ospreys will attempt to defend their Magners League crown and strive for glory in the Heineken Cup. | I've had time to work on my shoulder - it plagued me all season - work on my fitness and make sure I'm right for a massive season |
"It's probably the only pre-season I've had for about seven years so I'm feeling fresh and ready to go," said Williams. "I was disappointed not to have gone on tour in the summer and there's nothing worse than watching your fellow players out there and playing against a very good New Zealand side. "It was quite painful to watch on telly, but personally it's done me the world of good. "I've had time to work on my shoulder - it plagued me all season - work on my fitness and make sure I'm right for a massive season this year. "I'd like to think that I'm actually ahead of schedule and I'm looking forward to it. "I'm ready to go. There's only so much fitness and speed training you can do. I certainly needed the pre-season - I needed a big one. "I said that to the Ospreys and Welsh coaches that I want to be 100% fit - as fit as I've ever been - because I know how much of a season it is, providing I am selected for Wales and can get to that World Cup. "That would be great for me and yes, it's a long time for me, a lot of rugby in the meantime, but I'm in a good place. "I hope I can get through the season, stay away from any injuries and enjoy myself."
