Daniel Browne's second-half try gave Northampton Saints a hard-fought win at a foggy Franklin's Gardens on Friday.
Number eight Browne pounced on a loose ball on the Wasps tryline after the pressure finally told following a third successive five-metre scrum.
Wasps were 6-3 ahead after a dour first half when Mark van Gisbergen answered Carlos Spencer's opening penalty.
But Van Gisbergen wasted a great chance to win the match by missing two simple penalties in the last 10 minutes.
Northampton coach Paul Grayson "It was all about the points and winning the game any way we could.
"Technically it wasn't great but in terms of spirit and heart we showed it when we needed it most.
"Wasps might say that if they'd kicked better they'd have won, but we've come out with the result we all wanted and it should give them some confidence."
Wasps rugby director Ian McGeechan "There were a lot of points on offer that we didn't take and that led to us losing a game we should have got away with.
"The conditions were never easy but we wouldn't change anything. We just didn't convert the pressure into points."
