Duane Goodfield is looking for a fresh start at Rodney Parade |
Newport Gwent Dragons have signed promising hooker Duane Goodfield from Cardiff Blues on a two-year deal. Goodfield, 23, has played 26 times for the Blues in the Magners League and EDF and Heineken Cups. Dragons boss Paul Turner said: "Duane is an up-and-coming hooker with lots of potential and a big career ahead." Goodfield said: "I'm looking forward to becoming part of the Dragons squad next season and am hoping for a fresh start in terms of my career." | 606: DEBATE |
The player added: "I had the opportunity to play some great rugby throughout national age grade tournaments and captained Wales Under-21 in Argentina under the development of one of the Dragons coaches, Dai Rees. I'm excited about a future at Rodney Parade." Goodfield's signing follows that of fly-half Shaun Connor from the Ospreys and the re-signing of Ashley Smith, Martyn Thomas, Steve Jones and Gethin Robinson. However, it was also announced on Friday that Wales cap Ceri Sweeney will leave the Dragons to join the Blues. Turner said: "Duane will add to our strength in depth that is needed within the squad and we are delighted he has committed to the region." Assistant coach Dai Rees added: "We are pleased to have signed a young Welsh player and Duane has shown great potential throughout age grade and his time at the Blues. "Duane will be looking to re-establish his form at regional level, following an unfortunate shoulder injury and we're excited about his aspiration to grasp the opportunity at the Dragons."
Newport Rugby Club and Newport Gwent Dragons have submitted a planning application for the regeneration of the Rodney Parade stadium. The scheme will provide for a 15,000-capacity stadium with 13,000 seats, together with community and commercial facilities for matchday and non-matchday activities. The scheme incorporates student accommodation and private residential apartments which will provide the funding that will enable the new stadium to be built, plus a community centre, conference centre and education suite.
