Newcastle Falcons head coach Alan Tait believes his squad will benefit from their 34-7 LV= Cup final defeat by Gloucester on Sunday.

The match at Franklin's Gardens was the club's first final in seven years, and the first showpiece fixture for the majority of the Falcons' squad.

"We've got to be happy for getting into a final," Tait told BBC Newcastle.

"A lot of young kids today have got a run out in a final, and hopefully that will help them for the future."

We need to stay in the Premiership - then we can celebrate that we got something out of the season

Tait's attentions will now turn back to the league, and cementing the club's place in rugby's top tier for another season.

"We're not a bad side, they're down in the changing rooms, but we've told them that we've got another goal to aim for," Tait continued.

"Gloucester will head off now to try to win the Premiership, but we're going to have to secure Premiership rugby, that's our goal and that's what I've asked them to focus on.

"There are seven games left, and we need to stay in the Premiership and then we can also celebrate that we got something out of the season."

Falcons are currently second from bottom in the Premiership, seven points clear of Leeds with a game in hand, and two points behind Sale, again with a game in hand.
