Newcastle Falcons coach Paul Moriarty to face hearing

Newcastle assistant Paul Moriarty will attend a Rugby Football Union hearing on Monday to explain comments made during the Northampton loss last month.

He was summoned after comments about the substitution of prop Kieran Brookes during the 34-13 defeat on 30 October.

A statement from the RFU said the comments were "misleading" and "could have been construed as signalling an intended breach of IRB Law 3.12".

However the club itself will not be the subject of any further action.

Rule 3.12 of the International Rugby Board's laws of the game states that "a player who has been substituted may replace an injured player".

In the case of the Northampton game Brookes was replaced by Grant Shiells in the first half, but then returned to the field in the second period for Tim Ryan.

Ex-Welsh dual code international and former Swansea player and ex-Scarlets forwards coach Moriarty was quoted as saying at half-time on a live television interview that the replacement of Brookes was made to "give him a couple of minutes' break".

A Falcons official has also been quoted as saying: "We asked the fourth official if we could make the substitutions and Tim Ryan had a back injury.

"As far as we are concerned, that's the end of the matter."
